Los Lunas Schools’ vision for this second high school was to integrate technical career instruction and college preparatory courses in a single, innovative academy-based curriculum. The facility design accommodates pre-engineering, electronics, culinary, cosmetology and advanced auto lab programs with easily adapted spaces that are technologically robust and supported by flexible HVAC infrastructure. An additional practical need was to phase construction and maintain an operational school throughout each phase.
The design team and the District decided on a multi-building campus model in order to reduce internal circulation and maximize program space. Adaptability was an important feature of the design, such as organizing classroom spaces adjacent to the science and arts academies that could serve either use as well as providing multi-purpose classrooms with movable partitions to allow for varied group sizes and teaching methods throughout the school. Exterior courtyards reduce congested areas and function as informal gathering spaces and outdoor classrooms as required. The site design optimizes safety and flow of vehicular traffic while providing for future building expansion.
This 166,000 square-foot high school was designed for 1,300 students.
