UNLV Science, Engineering & Technology Building
Mariposa Community Center | Thornburg | UNLV Science & Technology | Hyderabad Community | Westlake Village | Turquoise Trail
The landscape architecture for UNLV’s SET building emphasizes both its place within the Mojave Desert and its academic setting. The project has been designed to achieve LEED-NC Silver certification. The new landscaping, which is in contrast to UNLV’s traditional campus landscape of grass and trees, serves as a kind of demonstration garden for Mohave plants. Pavement patterns, seating areas and circulation routes respond to the architecture while arcing through the site and meshing with existing campus pedestrian and vehicle corridors. Salt-finished concrete walks, integrally-colored concrete benches and native stone and plant materials reflect the textures, colors and components of the natural environment, glimpses of which can be had from certain vantage points on the site. Educationally, the design comes to grips with the paradigm of making technology, new construction and our everyday lives ecologically compatible with our fragile environments.
