The Thornburg Campus

Jefferson Green | Mariposa Office Building | BlueCross BlueShield
Yates Petroleum | Riley & Shane Law Offices | Thornburg Campus | Rio Grande Credit Union

With strict controls of the Santa Fe style imposed by the surrounding development, this facility is designed to house 100,000sf of state-of-the-art office space, a food service facility and a conference center.  Designed by Legoretta + Legoretta with D/P/S, one of the project goals was to take advantage of the wonderful New Mexico climate and its challenging site.  The building provides access to exterior courtyards and balconies throughout the campus.  The design maximizes views and provides natural day lighting with the introduction of large glazed but carefully fenestrated portions of the façade.  The scale of the facility was of prime importance since it is located adjacent to residential areas.

The building is comprised of a series of contiguous, smaller footprint structures that “step down” and integrate with the sloping site.  Organized around a centralAl exterior plaza, the structures are connected by narrow, glazed breezeways and shared common space.  Both passive and active water harvesting features are utilized throughout the site. Rainwater from the roofs are collected and stored to irrigate the drought tolerant landscaping.  A porous paving system is used for the parking area to reduce “heat island” effects and allow storm water to percolate to replenish the water table. The project achieved LEED Gold certification in September 2009.
