The goal of this project was to renovate and modernize the school campus and facility buildings to provide a pleasant, durable, accessible and safe environment, as well as create a sense of pride for students. Many of the existing spaces throughout the facility were altered or redesigned to meet statewide adequacy standards, and the entire renovation project had to be executed in three separate design and construction phases coordinated with two other middle school projects within the District.
Gallup Middle School was originally constructed in 1953, comprised of a two story classroom building, a separate cafeteria, library and gymnasium complex, situated on a 30 acre site which included an athletic field and several hard surface play areas. Although not designed for it, the original facility campus over the years had to accommodate a student population of 600 students for 6th and 7th grades. In order to house that large a student population, elective classes were held in a separate building across the street, and 13 portable classrooms were temporarily on-site. As part of GMCS Master Plan, the school was renovated and downsized to a design capacity of 405 students in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades starting 2008 academic year.
Phase one, comprised of a complete site redesign to accommodate supervised separate vehicle and bus drop off areas along with pedestrian friendly exterior interconnection between the various buildings on the campus.
Phase two, included a utilization study and analysis to assess the adequacy of the existing facilities and design a temporary school campus with portable buildings to accommodate entire school population.
Phase three, addressed various issues in the existing building related to accessibility, state adequacy space compliance, and new HVAC systems.
