Thermal Test Complex, Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM

The Thermal Test Complex is a unique fire sciences laboratory that allows controlled and repeatable tests to be performed in abnormal thermal environments. The facility presented a unique set of design challenges including explosive safety, minimizing hazards to neighboring structures and equipment, and providing a safe operating environment for personnel. In recognition of the challenges surmounted during the design, Sandia facility managers and the design team received the 2003 Gold President’s Quality Award, Sandia National Laboratories’ highest commendation. The design team, Sandia facility managers, and the construction contractor won this award again in 2005 for execution of the design during construction.
