University of New Mexico Master Plan Update
The University of New Mexico Master Plan was an update to an existing master plan done over a decade ago, which addresses the entire campus, from the Health Science Center on the north campus to the athletic complex on the south campus.
The Master Plan will be a tool that helps the University make site location and design decisions that reinforce the long term goals of the University. It will help coordinate multiple projects that are anticipated to be built in the future, including new parking garages, housing, a recreation center, and new classrooms. In this respect, the Master Plan is a very complex and dynamic site development plan that helps the University understand the interrelated nature of discreet, individual projects that have a cumulative impact on the overall character of the campus as it strives to create a live, work, learn, and play environment.
Sustainability informs all the major components of the Master Plan. In this era of dwindling resources and global warming concerns, the University is keenly aware of the need to reduce energy consumption in buildings and increase transportation choices for both faculty and students. The Master Plan aims to reduce the need for students to have a car on campus by increasing on-campus housing options and developing a more robust network of shuttles, public transportation, and bike paths. It also proposes a practical plan to reduce water consumption and harvest storm water to augment watering of landscapes. The Master Plan will be successful if it helps the University attract and retain students, recruit quality faculty, and establish a more distinct “brand” for the campus.
